This book is an appraisal of Hendrik Verwoerd's career in the context of his times. For a man who so dominated South Africa in his heyday, surprisingly little has been written about Verwoerd. There are two book-length studies, each highly unsatisfactory. One is by the former South African Labour M.P., now living in exile, Alex Hepple, and appeared the year after his death. Wilhelm Verwoerd’s book explodes this perspective and challenges us to witness what it means to hold at once the love that one has for one’s family and a deep sense of responsibility to engage. Dr Verwoerd’s first principle of government, the author shows us, was that the highest levels of attainment in our society must be protected, so that those attainments can spread to others.
